This ISO image contains minimal operation system - that is, it boots to commandline (no Xorg, no applications, pretty much nothing). It is meant to be a way to install a Linux OS from a CD, or for people to build minimal servers or custom ISOs on top of it.

So, if you need some Desktop for instance, MATE, run the command below:

 sudo apt install xorg mate-core

As for Cinnamon Desktop, run below:

 sudo apt install xorg cinnamon-core dbus-x11
 
Then start X session:

 startx
Or
 sudo systemctl restart display-manager
 
The file size of the ISO image is so small that you can also burn it into Compact Disc.
To install your Live image onto HDD, use 'calamares-settings-debian' package.
